Hispanic Heritage Film Series: Aquí y Allá
Aquí: Pedro returns home to a small mountain village in Guerrero, Mexico after years of working in the US. He finds his daughters older, and more distant than he imagined. His wife still has the same smile. Having saved earnings from trips to the US, he hopes to now finally make a better life, and to pursue his dreams of starting a band. Allá: The villagers think this year’s crop will be bountiful. There is also good work in a growing city an hour away. But the locals are wise to a life of insecurity, and their thoughts are often of family members or opportunities far away, north of the border.

Dance Dance Party Party!

Now in its 10th year, enjoy over 100 exhibiting artists and artisans, Maryland breweries, food trucks and vendors, and live entertainment, block by block in Downtown Hyattsville.

Capoeira Angola with Skher Brown & The Dancing Warriors
The whole family will be dazzled by the spins, kicks, flips and live music of this unusual art form, which has its origins in Central Africa but evolved in Brazil. Learn a few words of Brazilian Portuguese as you join the call-and-response songs and stories.

Y’all Pendyal Jazz
Y’all Pendyal is Anuraag Pendyal on piano and Jim Lande on sax. Both sing. Anuraag is a full time musician in New Orleans playing both written and improvised music. Jim is a regular at the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation and jazz jams in the area. Together, they will play a mix of jazz, blues and pop.

For Hispanic Heritage Month, don’t miss this beautiful film from writer/director Aurora Guerrero. In a fast-paced immigrant community where dreams are often lost to economic survival, two young Chicanas contemplate life when they stir unexpected desires in each other.
